I’m sitting 114 miles from Katahdin
in an iconic hostel named Shaw’s. I truly do mean iconic. It’s full of hikers, the shower is delightful, the price is right, and the breakfast is epic. This morning I started playing guitar with Karate Kid and 7 other hikers picked up instruments. We had a big jam circle, which can be seen here.
Now I smell new, I feel refreshed, and I’m drinking my second mug of hot chocolate.
Life is pretty dope.
So how HAVE things been going?
It’s been a little while since I gave you the updates on how the hike is currently going so here’s some stuff you might like to know:
- Southern Maine was a BITCH But I loved it. We could only do 10 mile days and things moved very slow. We went through Mahoosic Notch, which I’ll write more about in another post.
- The WEATHER HAS BEEN AMAZING. 60s during the day, down into the 40s at night, always sunny, always starry, totally perfect.
- I’ve been catching the most amazing sunsets because every day has been so chill
- Look at this.

- And freaking THIS!
This night was so awesome because we went over the Bigelows which are the last super huge mountains until Kathadin, and I got to the last peak to find all my friends curled up together eating dinner as the sun set. It was a most amazing ending to a difficult day. - I hiked 22 miles in one freakin’ day which is a huge deal for these teeny tiny legs, especially because I didn’t leave until 9am.
- We had to ride in a canoe to cross a river because it is literally life threatening to ford it.

- I drank my first Moxie! ….and enjoyed it.
- We watched Heavy Metal in the hostel last night and I haven’t laughed so much in a long time.
So now I decompress and get ready to recompress and then keep hiking.
Tomorrow?
The Hundred Mile Wilderness.
(Or as Carleton would say, the Hundred Mile Chillderness)
Six days of walking with a heavy heavy pack to the base of Katahdin.
And then that’s it.
Fly on!
