“I’ve never been camping, but I think I’ll hike the Appalachian Trail this Spring.”
And that’s how this all began. In March, 2017 I set out to hike as much of the Appalachian Trail as possible. The adventure unfolded in an unlikely manner, and by September 12th, I summited Katahdin in Maine having hiked 1,189.8 miles.
Quick Facts About the AT:
- The AT spans 14 states, from Georgia to Maine
- It’s official length changes based on trail re-routes, but it is about 2,189 miles long
- It takes the average person 6 months to hike the entire thing
- The highest point is located in Tennessee on Clingman’s Dome, at 6,643ft.
- The lowest point is located in New York by Bear Mountain, at 124ft.
- According to the AMC, you will have gained and lost about 550,000ft in elevation by the end of a thru-hike
